CHILDBIRTH SUPPORT

Beneficiaries enrolled in the TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP) under TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas, or TRICARE Select Overseas who are planning a pregnancy or expecting a baby are eligible as of January 1, 2025 to receive Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support services under the new Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration (CBSD). The demonstration will run from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

WHAT SERVICES ARE COVERED UNDER THE CHILDBIRTH AND BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT DEMONSTRATION (CBSD)?

Childbirth Support Services
The TRICARE benefit (under the CBSD) covers beneficiaries receiving childbirth support services when provided by a Certified Labor Doula (CLD). The benefit allows for up to 6 hours of outpatient visits with a CLD plus a single delivery event once per birth.

To be eligible for the childbirth support benefit with a CLD, the following criteria must be met:

  • Enrollment in either TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas, or TRICARE Select Overseas
  • Pregnancy progression of at least 20 weeks (about 4 and a half months)
  • Intent to deliver with a TRICARE-authorized provider
  • No plans to deliver in a military hospital or clinic

Note: To qualify for services under this demonstration, you must give birth with a TRICARE-authorized medical provider.

Breastfeeding Support Services
The current TRICARE benefit covers six (6) outpatient appointments for breastfeeding consultations or counseling when received by a TRICARE-certified medical provider (such as an obstetrician/gynecologist, physician, nurse, or midwife). The CBSD expands this coverage and includes sessions and services provided by a Lactation Consultant or Counselor. Additionally, any TRICARE-accepted provider, including a Lactation Consultant or Counselor will be able to provide you with breastfeeding support in an individual breastfeeding counseling session or within a group session with other mothers.

To be eligible for the breastfeeding benefit with a certified Lactation Consultant, Counselor, or group breastfeeding counseling session, the following criteria must be met:

  • Enrollment in either TRICARE Prime Overseas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas, or TRICARE Select Overseas
  • Pregnancy progression of at least 27 weeks (about 6 months)
  • Qualifies for TRICARE's breastfeeding support benefit for the TOP country location

If you are thinking of using a Certified Labor Doula (CLD), Lactation Services Consultant (LSC), or Lactation Counselor during your pregnancy, you can find a TRICARE-authorized medical provider via the TOP Provider Search Tool, or alternatively you can call your TOP Regional Call Center to speak with a member of the TOP Medical Team who can provide you with more details.
